Headline History

Overview:

An interactive educational website aimed at children aged seven - 14 years which encourages them to become digital reporters on fictional historical newspapers. There are 24 newspapers covering English history from the eras of the Romans, the Tudors, the Victorians and World War Two.

The newspapers include regional variations – choose your region of England and you’ll find stories from that part of the country. In total there are thousands of true stories written in child-friendly format.

Each edition also features video and audio clips of actors playing witnesses to real historical events. Pupils can gather quotes from them to write and re-write news stories. There are four ability levels to choose from to keep pupils of all ages challenged and interested.

The site was an original idea by NEP (one of the DMGT companies that became AND) was commissioned and paid-for in 2003 by Culture Online – then part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It has scooped more than a dozen awards including an Interactive BAFTA in 2005.

The site is aimed at children, teachers and parents and can currently be used free of charge by anyone with Internet access – at school or home.
